Transport Topics — ROTATE: Knowing the “What” and “Why” of Data
July 12, 2024

Transport Topics again sought Ken's perspective on fleet tire management and the importance of understanding the data behind maintenance expense.

Ken emphasized that knowing tire cost alone is insufficient. Fleets must understand why tires are being removed, when they were installed, mileage achieved, application and position in the equipment lifecycle before management can make informed decisions.

Topic: Maintenance analytics, tire lifecycle intelligence and cost accountability.

Fleet Maintenance — Five Ways Small Fleets Can Control Maintenance Costs
August 4, 2025

Fleet Maintenance interviewed Ken regarding preventive maintenance and maintenance-cost control for smaller commercial fleets.

Ken emphasized a principle that has guided his fleet-management philosophy throughout his career: maintenance will eventually be performed—the critical question is whether it occurs under the fleet's control through disciplined preventive maintenance or unexpectedly through breakdowns and failures.

Topic: Preventive maintenance, small-fleet management and cost control.

FleetOwner — Can Lower-Viscosity Engine Oils Help Lower CPM?
August 12, 2026

FleetOwner sought Ken's perspective on extended oil-drain intervals and the potential effect of modern lubricants on fleet cost per mile.

Ken cautioned that extended drain intervals depend on disciplined PM execution and consistent oil analysis. Purchasing more advanced products without the operating discipline to manage them properly can expose fleets to additional risk rather than savings.

Topic: Cost per mile, preventive maintenance, oil analysis and fleet operating discipline.

Experience Behind the Commentary

These interviews reflect the same operating principles behind KME Services today: understand what the fleet data is saying, identify why performance is occurring, quantify the financial and operational exposure, establish accountability, execute corrective action and measure whether performance improves.

Ken's experience spans the shop floor, fleet maintenance leadership, safety, operations and executive management, including responsibility for organizations with hundreds of power units and full P&L accountability.

Today, KME Services applies that experience to help trucking companies improve fleet performance, reduce maintenance cost, increase equipment availability and make better asset decisions.

“There are plenty of people who can tell you what's wrong. I'm much more interested in what we're going to do about it, who's responsible for doing it, what number we're going to measure—and whether that number changed."
